The paperwork side of running a crew
Insurance, licensing, lien rights, and financing — organized so you can find the right office fast.
Workers' compensation and general liability are where most small outfits get caught short. The insurance pages explain what each policy actually covers, what a certificate of insurance has to say, and where to compare carriers.
The legal section links to state licensing boards, lien and prompt-payment statutes, and low-cost legal aid for small contractors. The finance section covers equipment loans, invoice factoring, and lines of credit sized for a crew, not a corporation.
Do I need general liability if I already carry workers' comp?
They cover different risks. Workers' comp covers injuries to your crew; general liability covers damage or injury you cause to others. Most general contractors require both on a certificate before you set foot on site.
What is a mechanic's lien and when can I file one?
It is a claim against a property for unpaid work. Deadlines and notice requirements are set state by state and are short — check your state's statute the day an invoice goes past due, not months later.
Does Union Break sell insurance or loans?
No. Nothing here is sponsored and we take no commission — the directory only points you to the carriers, boards, and lenders.
